A small query is on my mind: when somebody submits his/her resignation on today's date and has not reported for duty in the past 5 days, what should be the language used in accepting the resignation? Should the resignation be accepted on today's date, or should it be accepted based on the date of his last working day?

Have read the threat today so don't know how relevant it will be. If employee is resigning on paper on today's date, resignation will be from today's date. The previous dates will be treated as absent. It is better to take the resignation from a past date, so communicate the same to the employee and write on the letterhead that we accept the resignation from today's date. Hand over one copy to the employee, get it signed, and follow the exit interview if required.
