Hello AVS,

We people always refer to many things from foreign authors' books. However, it is a really good attempt to spread the information from our own book "THIRUKURAL." Moreover, I am personally happy because I belong to his state (TAMILNADU) and have been reading Thirukural since the age of 6.

I am truly blessed to have had the chance to read it in its original version (TAMIL). It is a commendable effort to showcase our tradition and culture to this corporate world.

Thank you so much for sharing such valuable information on this forum.

Regards,
Indhu.

It would have been better if the actual Kurals referred to are also given in the write-up. There are many footnote numbers in the write-up. What do they denote?

This one is a lovely mail and you should read it... A good one too... I am sure you will like it.

A saint asked his disciples, 'Why do we shout in anger? Why do people shout at each other when they are upset?'

Disciples thought for a while, one of them said, 'Because we lose our calm, we shout for that.'

'But, why shout when the other person is just next to you?' asked the saint. 'Isn't it possible to speak to him or her with a soft voice? Why shout at a person when you're angry?'

Disciples gave some other answers but none satisfied the saint.

Finally, he explained, 'When two people are angry at each other, their hearts distance a lot. To cover that distance, they must shout to be able to hear each other. The angrier they are, the stronger they will have to shout to hear each other through that great distance.'

Then the saint asked, 'What happens when two people fall in love? They don't shout at each other but talk softly, why? Because their hearts are very close. The distance between them is very small...'

The saint continued, 'When they love each other even more, what happens? They do not speak, only whisper and they get even closer to each other in their love. Finally, they even need not whisper, they only look at each other and that's all. That is how close two people are when they love each other.'

MORAL: When you argue do not let your hearts get distant, do not say words that distance each other.

When passions overtake senses, we do not recognize our voice raising. This should be remembered and used in day-to-day life. Writing and reading about things like this is okay, but practicing the same is very difficult. Let our HRs (who deal most of the time with humans) practice these words of wisdom. Very timely advice.

Hi AVSJAI,

Nice post, I really enjoyed it. However, I have my own opinion to express. When the situation is serious, keeping close to the heart and whispering or looking at each other silently will not work. There is a limit to everything; one has to shout to get things done as there are also callous people, or else things will be out of control.

Happy Diwali.

Mindset: A Worthy Read

There was a man who worked for the railroad. One day, as he went into the freezer compartment to do his routine work, the door accidentally closed, and he found himself trapped in the compartment. He shouted for help, but no one heard him since it was past midnight. He tried to break down the door, but he could not. As he lay in the freezer compartment, he began to feel colder and colder. Then he began to feel weaker and weaker, and he wrote on the wall of the compartment, "I am feeling colder and colder; and I am getting weaker and weaker. I am dying, and this may be my last words."

In the morning, when the other workers opened up the compartment, they found him dead. The sad twist to the above story is that the freezing apparatus in the compartment had broken down a few days earlier. The poor worker did not know about the damaged freezing apparatus, and in his mind, the freezing apparatus was working perfectly. He felt cold, got weaker, and literally willed himself to die.

Moral: Our subconscious mind can be cheated. The subconscious mind can only accept and act on information passed to it by the conscious mind. It has no capacity to reject or decline any instructions or information passed to it by the conscious mind. In the case of the poor worker, he consciously thought that he was getting colder, weaker, and dying, and the subconscious mind accepted the above instructions and affected his physical body. That was how he willed himself to die.

"It is only a mistake when you refuse to fix it, until then it is only an error."

Hi!

In the same line, there is another story. There were three persons walking along the hillside. It was getting dark, and they slipped into a pit but fortunately got hold of a branch of a tree. They clung to the branch of the tree for the whole night, thinking that they were hanging above the hilltop. After dawn, they realized there was only a few inches between their legs and the ground floor.

Moral: The solution to problems is very close to us. It is we who have to find where it is.

Dear AVS,

Anger can be compared to a matchstick which has a head but no brain (thinking power). Hence, one has to manage anger, especially at the workplace, but not suppress or control it. If you observe, the word "ANGER" is one alphabet short of danger, and if you add the alphabet "D" in the beginning, the word becomes "DANGER". The best way to manage anger is to become spiritual or, as Paul Wilson of Australia says in his book "The Big Book of Calmness," always get surrounded by good people or positive healthy surroundings which will have a powerful and lasting influence on the mind. Adi Shankara had already said this in his "Bhaja Govindam" where he says association of good people will lead to detachment, which in turn leads to a stable mind, which ultimately liberates you from rebirths. Modern management experts have now started saying that one should always "keep the end in mind when you begin a job/project/work," but Indians always said and practiced this 5000 years ago. They always insisted on what is permanent in this world rather than yield to temporary temptations and gratifications! The prayer, meditation, satsang, etc., are all ways to fill your subconscious mind with pure thoughts. When your mind is filled with pure thoughts, you will generate pure feelings which give rise to good actions! Modern psychologists are saying this now, which was known to Indians long back. So practicing other techniques of anger management and keeping the association of good people will ensure pure thoughts in the mind, and anger will thus be eliminated completely in the long run.

Why tell stories in an age of computers?

Because the words of the storyteller reach across cultures; for stories speak to the heart first.

Storytelling is the world's oldest teaching tool and one that belongs to many settings.

Stories around the world are being passed on to teach history and morals, to explore inner and outer worlds, to offer devotion, to entertain, heal, and inspire.

By storytelling, the learning possibilities are endless, for each story touches us on many different levels.

Have a nice day.

Bill Gates’ Secret Weapon: Stop to Think

Bill Gates stops to think at least twice a year. Bill escapes to his wilderness lodge every six months for one week. It is during these times that he develops strategy for Microsoft. It was one of these thinking sessions that helped him to move his company to embrace the Internet and the related opportunities.

How often do you stop to think? Really think? About your business; about your future; about your life? You should invest at least one day every three months thinking. Try it – one out of 90 days thinking. That is only four days a year thinking. That is not a lot to ask. But imagine how much more that would be than your competition.

Schedule that undisturbed time to think. What could be more important that thinking? Yet we too often are too busy doing stuff without thinking. Your business will survive and thrive only if you think. Your life will be more satisfying if you think.

You might say that Bill Gates has time to think because he is the richest guy in the world. The reality is that, he is the richest guy in the world – because he takes time to think.

What questions might you ask during these thinking sessions?
What business are you in?
Where is the industry going?
What trends do you see?
What threatens your business?
What are the unknowns?
How can you distinguish yourself from the competition?
What other questions should you be asking?
What issues/ decisions are you avoiding that you need to confront?

Think!

What is the Secret to Success?
I have interviewed over 400 business leaders over the past decade on my radio show, Business in Motion. The guests include entrepreneurs, corporate executives and business authors.
I keep searching for answers. Answers to questions like, "What is the secret to success?"
Although the answer comes in different words, the common message is: Success comes from doing little things consistently well over time.
Think about that. Success is about the small stuff. Yes you do need to sweat some of the small stuff – if you want to be successful. "Don't sweat the small stuff" was not written by or for business owners.
Not all of the small stuff – but the right small stuff. The secret is in finding and focusing on the right small stuff.
Good luck.

"The universe is a living, intelligent, organized whole, and, most
importantly, it is organized hierarchically. Yes, hierarchically,
from the densest, darkest regions to the divine world, which is
pure light. And if humans encounter so many difficulties and are
exposed to so much suffering, it is because they have not found
the right attitude to have towards this cosmic hierarchy, which
has God at its pinnacle.
But what is an attitude? A synthesis of what we are. It shows
the state of our physical body but also of our psychic and
spiritual bodies, as well as the quality of the energies
circulating and working inside us. Our attitude fashions us,
shapes us; it connects us to the different regions of space, and
when it is an attitude of respect, love and, above all,
gratitude, it attracts to us the currents and spirits of the
world of light."

In Ability Development from Age Zero, Shinichi Suzuki describes telling a violin student:

‘”Stop playing the violin for one week. There is something you must learn besides the violin. It is the spirit of doing things for other people. … To begin with, pick up your friend’s books when they have fallen…. Live by looking for things to do for other people. This is your homework for the week.”

[The student asked] “…what does doing things for other people have to do with violin practice?” …

“When listening to your performance, I could clearly feel that you were self-centered in your heart. If your heart is set to work for others, then your mind should be able to work more sensitively in an expanded world. If you do so, then more abundant, delicately beautiful expressions will enter your performance. …”

… art becomes higher as humans develop higher. …great talent and a deep, beautiful feeling in the heart are closely tied together.”‘

Hmm, it's nice, but it's not making sense. When a father gets angry with his son, sometimes he shouts at him, but that doesn't mean he is getting distant from him. Anger can be for varied reasons. The anger of a parent while scolding his child would be different as it is with a purpose. The anger of a girl while facing eve teasing somewhere on a roadside will be different. When you find it difficult to control yourself, you show your anger. Anger is something you don't plan and show; it depends on situations and circumstances.

Firstly, thanks to Sri AVS for the great article. It is very clear that love makes people become close to each other. So, everyone is required to love others. Love is not only between two lovers; it is universal in various ways between parents and children, brothers and sisters, and likewise.

When the world is filled with love, the earth will remain peaceful and harmonious. Hence, start loving others.

The corrected text with proper spelling, grammar, and punctuation, as well as paragraph formatting, is:

"hahahahhahahahhahaahahahha very true indeed... viku kaha hain... meeting me...:D"
Nukani
This can only happen at higher levels. 😊 And juniors become prey to it. 😄😄😄
