Dear Harsh,

A store manager should:

a) be capable of categorizing the store items into classes A, B, and C based on ABC analysis.
b) have an understanding of various KPIs related to his job.
c) be able to implement the concept of 5S in his store.
d) be aware of fire and safety rules for stores.
e) be able to prevent pilferage of inventory items.
f) be able to analyze past consumption data and define safety stock, maximum stock, reorder level, etc.
g) be able to efficiently handle stores using various store equipment.
h) be aware of the indexing and labeling procedures.
i) be thorough with the software used in the stores.
j) be able to provide insights to management on holding obsolete items.

Hope the above points are sufficient.

I handle the training program on Purchase and Inventory Management. My forthcoming workshop is scheduled in Mumbai on 23 Oct 2010. You can click here to read its details. In the module on Inventory management, stores management is one of the topics. Do you wish to outsource the interviewing for this position to me? You can do so by obtaining permission from your management.

Thanks,
