Dear Friends,

I am an HR professional with 7+ years of experience, currently working in a security company. My problem is that there has been a 2.5-year gap on my resume, and as a result, I am receiving fewer opportunities. Please guide me on what I should do?

Thank you.

Dear Pratibha,

There is nothing wrong per se in having a break in a woman's CV. What matters are the reasons for the break. If the reasons are valid, then you may not need to worry much about it. Those who reject your candidacy for this reason are unprofessional. It is better to steer clear of such companies.

Possibly, it could be the mindset of those who are selecting you. Many HR professionals believe that uninterrupted service is essential. However, they fail to understand that it may not be possible in all cases. A career break does not erase knowledge from one's head or significantly diminish skills. A career break should not be seen as a stigma. However, this is the fallacy in the mindset of many HR professionals. Keep persevering. You will eventually find someone who evaluates you based on your skills or knowledge. Interestingly, the current HR Head of Google India had a career break from 2001 to 2006!

On the other hand, your candidature might not be meeting their requirements, and HR could be using the career break as an excuse to reject you. Therefore, after attending a job interview, immediately jot down the questions asked and your responses. Share this information with a senior person for evaluation. The feedback will help you provide better responses in future interviews!

All the best!
