Hello,

I am working as a manager for a small company. Recently, we have hired a person as a middle-level manager to work with us. It seems that he has obtained his Master's Degree from a legitimate British University. His Award certificate says that he has a Master's Degree in a particular subject; however, his memorandum or marks certificate says that he has a Post Graduate Certificate. I don't really understand this. When I asked him if his degree is real or fake, the candidate offered to show his graduation pictures, University Alumni membership cards, and letters, etc., and they all seem to be genuine. But my question is, why does his Award certificate say that he has a Master's degree, and his memorandum says that it is a Post Graduate certificate?

Is there any way I can verify it directly with his University in the UK? And what kind of action can I take just in case I find out that he has faked any of his documents or lied to us on his CV or during the interview? Can I take any action against him if he claimed that he has a Master's while he only had a PG certificate? Please let me know.

Thanks, Sushma.

Dear Sushma,

The employee in question doesn't seem to be at fault. A Master's degree in the UK is referred to as Post Graduation, hence the notification on the certificate. There is nothing fishy about it. It's only the USA that has MBA; elsewhere, it's PGDBA in India as well. Even IIMs write PGDBA on their certificates and not MBA as commonly known.

It's all about how they define it. Please connect with Nashbramhall. He is a senior educationist in the UK and can guide you accurately.

Dear Shushma,

I think that Nabomia is right. You should follow her suggestion. In my opinion, PGDBM and MBA are the same grade degree, so that is not an issue to take any action against him.

Dear Sushma,

If you have any doubts regarding the concerned employee, you have every right to inquire or check whether the certificates are correct or fake. According to your statement, your employee is producing other related documents that are genuine. Therefore, you have to decide.

Can I mask his name and confidential details and post those certificates as a link? Can someone go through it and let me know about the difference between a postgraduate certificate and a master's degree in the UK? Please inform me if this is acceptable.

Thanks, Sushma.
