Dear Seniors,
Greetings. Firstly I would like to give a little a background about my company's shift timings. We have 3 shifts in my organization, Ist shift from 7am to 3pm, IInd shit from 2pm to 10pm IIIrd shift from 10pm to 7am and one General Shift from 9am to 5.30pm. We work for only 5 days in a week. We have only white collared employees in this unit. My company is registered under the Factory's Act. My question here is:
1) Can an employee work for 2 continuos shifts in a week? That is suppose on a particular day can an employee work from 7am till 10pm. This scenario arrises only in emergencies.
2) Comp Offs - If a company like mine has 5 days working mentioned on the Appt Letter, then Saturday and Sunday both are considered as Comp - offs or only Sunday.
PS - Let me know if any more details are requires. Since I am not from IR background i might have not framed the questions properly.
Thanks,
Komal

Pl. note that the total number of hours in a quarter should not be more than 50 hrs. Basing on the exigencies you can ask an employee to continue in the next shift also but it should be once in a while and ensure that the number of hours in quarter to be not more than 50 as it is under Factories Act.
Once the organization declared as it is working for 5 days accordingly the work schedules might have fixed hence both Saturday & Sunday are to be considered as weekly offs and if the employee works on any weekly off day is eligible for compensatory off .
I believe that you are clear.

Dear Komal ji,
My answers to your questions are as under:
Shift timings are OK except there is an overlapping in 1st and 2nd shift. There is a prohibition of overlapping the shifts according to Section 58. You need to convince the authority that in this overlapping there is no work of same kind by both the shift workers.
Two continuous shifts any time are not permitted except in cases mentioned in Section 64 read with rules 100 to 102.
The reason for having Badli or Casual Worker is this only. You can not keep a worker on overtime for full shift.
Saturday and Sunday are your weekly off days. Compensatory holiday / off means if any worker works on your weekly off day he should be permitted to have off ( compensatory ) against his working on weekly off day within in two months time (Section 53).
Please note that the amendments 2014 in FA are offing.
Hope you will satisfy with my answers.
