Hi All,

I have prepared a VB code that can help unprotect any MS-Excel worksheets (password-protected, especially when we forget the passwords). I was just wondering if I can share it. I am sure it can help many of us. However, the challenge is that there is a possibility of people misusing it for unlawful or unethical purposes.

Hence, I request your inputs on this, whether I should share it or not. The majority of the decision would be considered!

Thanks & Regards,
Dikshit T G S.

Hi Dikshit,

It should be completely your decision whether to share this VB file or not. Alternatively, you may share this file by including an appropriate disclaimer such as "Do not misuse or unauthorized access prohibited."

You may also share this file based on requests received from members of this forum on their personal email ids.

Thank you.

Dear Dixit,

It's really great work done by you. Before publishing it, you can explore the possibility of creating a log of persons attempting to break the password and using the data, including the date and time (even if someone provides incorrect details, we can verify by reviewing the date and time). Alternatively, you could prompt for a specific word in the document to open it, ensuring only relevant individuals can access it.

Dear TGS,

Good to see HR Pro handling core IT tasks! You may share the file based on requests received from members of this forum on their personal email IDs where an undertaking is provided for bona fide use, not to misuse or attempt to gain unauthorized access. Your sharing of the file should include a disclaimer as advised by Rakesh, and the usage data should be shared by the beneficiaries as suggested by Binu.

Hello Dikshit T G S,

I second RB—it's nice seeing HR persons doing IT stuff. Coming to your main query, the suggestion of some members to share it ONLY on specific request on an individual basis would be better—that way you at least have control with WHOM you shared it. What they do later, frankly, will anyway NOT be in your control. If this is OK with you, please mail it to me at: .

But looking at it in another way, crooks always can come up with their own set of ingenuity. Else, I guess the Cyber-crime Police would be out of work :-)

When computers were invented, it was to make everyone's jobs easier—but whoever thought THEN that we would end up dealing with SO MANY Anti-Virus, Anti-spy, Anti-phishing... Anti-this, Anti-that... Programs now?

Hello Dixit,

We can easily find knives in the market, but only a few people out of a million use them for threatening because their perspective on knives is incorrect. Similarly, your posts should be utilized for a better purpose only. If you are not sharing to influence those few individuals whose interpretation of your post may be misguided, you are hindering your own ability to assist others. Therefore, please continue to share your posts.

I suggest share it selectively and not indiscriminately because if it falls into wrong hands it can pose a grave Data Security threat to an organisation Munshi

Hi All,

Thanks for the overwhelming responses. Many seniors have advised me to share it personally. I have decided to do the same upon personal request and have also started sharing it.

If you need the code, please drop an email, and I shall send you the document with detailed yet easy instructions and the VB code.

Hi Dikshit,

Firstly, congratulations. Having passwords protecting my documents and data, and having forgotten the passwords to them, I realize how important your tool and invention are.

However, as you mentioned, the code you developed is sensitive. If it falls into the wrong hands, it could lead to the outburst of information that should not have been leaked.

At the same time, it is a key to retrieving important information stored in the file when the key (password) is forgotten.

Firstly, make a disclaimer of the proper usage of the code. Define what is appropriate and what is not.

Do not share the code with everyone; share it only with one person, ideally from the IT Department.

So, if I accidentally forgot the password to my Excel file -

I can approach the IT team,

Give in writing and sign that "I have lost my password and hence need aid in retrieving the data. And that I allow the IT Team to use the secure password breaker to access my data." It should bear my signature, and then the IT person can use your code/algorithm on my PC to aid me.

Apart from that, I can change my password later.

The requisition should also include -

- Date and time of the request made
- Date and time of the request served
- Name and signature of the person who handled the request

Also, once the data is unlocked, they should take a signature from the request initiator.

This way, the algorithm would be used under surveillance.

Hope it helped. :-)

Hi Dikshit,

First of all, let me congratulate you for creating an important tool for the benefit of others. Please note, there are many applications and utilities available in the market and on the internet. Hence, you are not doing anything wrong, but be cautious while sharing it with anyone.

I would suggest that such applications should be used for personal use instead of official use. Please send the same to my inbox. Keep sharing and thanks in advance!! :)

Dear Dikshit,

Your help can lead us to betterment as we HR professionals are less familiar with IT matters. Those who intend to misuse the system can find other ways to do so. Therefore, I suggest you share (completely up to you).
