Could you please advise on the appropriate number of holidays a company should provide in a calendar year?

Holidays differ from company to company. The minimum number of holidays to be declared, however, will depend upon the state's Industrial Establishments (National and Festival Holidays) Act. According to the said Act, there will be at least three national holidays, such as January 26th, August 15th, and October 2nd. In some states' rules, May Day is also declared a national holiday. In addition to these, there will be some festival holidays which will be decided by the company in consultation with employees/trade unions. Festival holidays may vary from state to state, and in many states, there are nine such holidays.

Hi Anjana,

Typically, there should be at least 10 holidays given in a year. This may or may not include the mandatory national holidays or state holidays. Depending on your organization, however, you may increase the holidays to up to 15, but more than this is not preferred as it goes against the productivity of employees, who could actually combine various holidays and go for longer vacation days.

Please revert if still unclear.

Hi Anjana,

There should be at least 10 holidays given in a year. This should include the mandatory national holidays or state holidays (e.g., Independence Day, Republic Day, Gandhi Jayanti, and we have Karnataka Rajyotsava). In our organization, we declare 12 holidays.

Please revert if still unclear.
