In the private companies generally notice period is for 6 months. In case any employee does not perform then we can increase his probabition period after giving him extension letter.

It is not the Probation period that is countable like 3 month, 6 month and even 12 month.
It is only the speed and accuracy of the candidate in learning the things faster and adopting the working of the desired role.

it is the company policy to fix the period of probation, Normally it could be one year for junior level of employees and 6 months to 3 months for senior staffs.
as far as the labour law is concerned, you may refer to factories act for the definition of probation.
