Holidays are to be observed across India are:
Republic Day,
Independence Day,
Mahatma Gandhi's Birthday,
Budha Purnima
Christmas Day
Dussehra (Vijay Dashmi)
Diwali (Deepavali)
Good Friday
Guru Nanak's Birthday
Eid ul-Fitr
Eid al-Adha (Bakrid)
Mahavir Jayanti
Muharram
Prophet Mohammad's Birthday (Id-e-Milad)
3 Holidays are decided in congruence with State Govt.
An additional day for Dussehra
Holi
Janamashtami (Vaishanvi)
Ram Navami
Maha Shivratri
Ganesh Chaturthi / Vinayak Chaturthi
Makar Sankrantili
Rath Yatra
Onam
Plus any other holiday as per the Gazette Notification of respective States
Note your State Notification on leaves in Congruence with Central Govt Notification. Normally pvt companies have about 11-14 public holidays in a year...................rgrds

Well that depends on how well the management and the union (if any) has congruence on the leaves. For a smaller Company, you can take into account first the National Holidays then Major State Holidays and later on fill the rest with other Secular Holidays. Also take into account the religion & cultural bifurcation of your employee to make a consolidated list which would be fair & just. Holidays should also be taken into account after taking note of your Industry and Customer Service requirements.............rgrds

Yes.1st May is Labour day. But if you are either in Maharashtra/Gujarat State it is celebrated as State Holiday as these states were officially formed on this day. Apart from this it is internationally celebrated as "Workers/Labour Day" but also note that it is not a compulsory holiday as per the national gazatte.............rgrds
