During the boom, IT companies used to take large numbers in their recruitment. One of the major tools of selection/rejection is group discussion. They used to conduct this in mass scale and more than 50% used to be rejected. The parameters of selection used to be different but by and large they looked into some common skills. Here is the PPT to the best of my knowledge. Comments please!

Dear Mr KS Rao,

I have gone through the ppt on group discussion. You have taken good efforts. However, what needs to be added is following:

a) You have not mentioned the types of group discussions.

b) On slide 2, there is response to the question why group discussion? However, answers appear to be out of place. GD is conducted to test one's verbal communication skills, command over language, how the thoughts are presented (ability to use proverbs, idioms and phrases), whether there is coherence in the thoughts, depth of the thoughts and above all whether any creative solution is presented.

c) Your slide No 16 says that in general GD is conducted for 20-25 minutes and participating members are 10-15. In that case everyone will get barely 2 minutes. In two minutes one cannot judge contents that you have mentioned in slide No 6-10.

d) You can add word about teamwork too. If some member has not said anything and other member tries to grab opportunity, then it makes sense to involve non-participating member. This will show leadership as well.

e) You could add something on group discipline as well.

f) Most important aspect of GD is Time Management. Time is too short. Against this backdrop, what you say is quite important. Therefore, first comes what you say and then how you say.

Dear KS Rao, your ppt on group discussions is very good !! However, I dont see the relation between IT recruitments and group discussions.
I have been in the IT industry for 7 years and never have I seen GD as a means for selection. The reason may be that IT employees are not expected to have excellent communication as a 'primary' skill, since most of their work involves working with computers, almost silently.
May be more relevant to management related fields!

Thanks for your constructive comments. However, I wish to clarify all the points raised by you.
First, I made it clear that the GDs are related to IT recruitments. That is why I did not mention other GD types.
Second, my response to the question is general. Your points of response are specific to interviews.
Third, more or less all the parameters of GD evaluations of almost all the IT companies are (were) the same as I mentioned. The question of how actually candidates are evaluated in 2 minutes or less than that is frequently answered by them as experience and expertise.
Fourth, team work is covered under leadership point; see it once again.
Fifth, the discipline you mentioned is covered under behavioral traits.
Time discipline you mentioned is one of the presentation skill.

Dear Mr. Shikha Singh,

Thanks for your comments. During 2005-7, Satyam, Infosys, Wipro TCS etc have made group discussions as mandatory in the process of their selections. May be this is because of large number of requirements for candidates and large number of candidates appearing for campus drives.

The other point you made is also strange. Most of the IT companies were harping on communication and soft skills. These companies correctly identified that most of the tech students lack necessary skills of communication and soft skills. The tech students may be experts in their respective domains. But when they need to communicate to their team members, team leaders, to the customers and to the rest of the world, they did not possess the necessary communication skills. That is the reason why most of these companies conducted Faculty Development Programs to the faculties of the Engineering Colleges all over, especially, in AP; so that these faculties in turn can train the students in their respective skills. I think there are very few instances that recruiters resort to group discussion as a part of selection tool. In many instances, GD is use as tool to reject/eliminate the applicants. This is seen mostly in Campus recruitments. I think, in many of the corporate recruitment HR focuses more on eliminating the candidate, rather than finding the right fit for the role.

Yes. You are very right. A skill is something you do it again and again in such a way that you achieve improvement every time you do it. Soft skills are no exception. Soft skills are not a fund of knowledge. It is application of knowledge. Many students fail to apply because they learn it as knowledge by the outsourcing training agencies. Only those colleges who would employ training or who will have regular trainer on pay rolls may be able to inculcate these skills to their students. Oh, what to do? When do these colleges realise this fact? God only knows.
