A day on Saturday is fullday for working half day means 4 hours is equal to full one day working.
If you see working hours in week are 48 hours week you have to treat 48 working hours as full week for this purpose.

Dear Purnima,
The Law requires the company to provide one day off per week. That is Sunday, in your case. The company has a right to require employees to work the whole of Saturday. Retaining Saturday as a Half working day, is a concession on the part of the Company. By working for just half a day, the employees get paid for the full day. Hence, if the employee is absent for the half day, he should forfeit his leave for a full day.

Hi,
As per the Worksmen Compensation Act 1948 above directives are correct. But If your company has a standing instruction in it's HR Policy stating that a leave on Saturday will be considered as full day leave, then you can treat leave on Saturday as full leave. Also you have to declare in your HR Policy, there will be no half day leave on Saturdays. If it is not mentioned, you can implement the same immediately to avoid any legal consequences.

Purnima,
Does you company has a fixed and defined working hours per day and its timings. If it is 8hrs fixed for all Monday to Friday and 4 hrs for Saturday and the timings of each day is fixed then Saturday leave is a half day leave because it is defined as half day working as per your company's rules.
However the Shop and Estab Act (diff in diff states) mostly state 48 hrs of working in a week. So your organization may even have 8 hrs working all 6 days. But before implemening such rules they have to intimate the employee in advance as per the provisions of ID Act.
I hope you have got the answer.
