Recently i took new assignment of conducting Corporate social responsibility initiatives in our company. As such initiatives are people oriented initiatives i am searching ways and means to make people develop a feeling that they should do something for the society because they are making their livelihood out of natural resources available, directly or indirectly. We are planning to conduct a blood donation program a please give some insights on how to make this program a success and also to show the management that value addition has been done. Please share.

Let me first compliment you and your management for initiating this CSR drive and for planning a blood donation drive.Blood donation drives are gaining in popularity mainly because it has visibility, there is a clear identifiable contribution by each person who donates blood, the cause is very noble and in many ways it is perceived as relatively easy to execute.
However, this initiative has to be done in conjunction with an established hospital or blood bank which can provide the logistic support which is the key to this drive. You would also have to prepare the volunteers donating blood for there is fear of the needle in most people, the concerns about safety and hygiene, in some extreme cases religious sentiments or personal preferences would dissuade a miniscule lot and they must never be treated with contempt or disdain.
Mass blood donation drives are normally not encouraged especially on certain dates like 2nd October / 1st May etc since storage and preservation of the blood is an issue. Ideally fresh blood is what is most suitable and desirable so this first blood donation drive can be used as a curtain raiser for other CSR activities, What you must do though is to prepare a directory of voluntary blood donors who would agree to be contacted should an emergency arise. Their blood group/ contact details and consent are essential information in the data base. In my opinion, this data base is best kept with the company itself and HR can tie up with hospitals to facilitate urgent blood donations of rare groups by tapping in to this data base.

I think blood donation is a great idea for CSR. You should start convincing campaign in your office for showing the importance and need of blood donation. You can take help of presentations, speech of any concerned person, emails on internal network etc.

As said by the others you need to educate employees on this aspect. Its time you can have a donor database from your company.that would serve many purposes.
Appreciate if you can take some responsibility to empower some Govt schools with some Pencils,stationery,used text books in your local area.
That would help you build good relations with society

Your idea is really appreciable. I agree as one of the participants mentioned about spreading awareness and removing the myths related to blood donation. As people are really scared of the myths like catching HIV, weakness etc. You can take the inputs from NBTC & NACO advertisement, as these organisations are spreading a lot of awareness about blood donation now a days.
Also you can contact NGO like Rotary Club , Lions Club organizing the Blood donation camps for corporates as they already have well equipped mobile blood donation cabs and a team of doctors.

Anyone will appreciate such a noble activity, which has an interest of social cause, infact you are contributing to one of the nation’s prime requirement.
To get good response, and also to take care of your donor employee’s health, I understand a full day, or half day complementary leave is allowed for employee donors. I think this is compulsory. Can anyone confirm this !!

Normally after donation, the Hb% will go down. The donor may feel tiredness. That's the reason after Blood Donation, the donor will be given with some biscuit and juice or some fruits. The quality of the blood will become normal after 1.5 days.
There is no such specific guidelines, the donor needs to be given with leave. It is given only on humanitarian basis. (In defence if you donate blood you will get two days excuse duty, and you can take two days rest on that day).

In CSR we must know what is the investment being made and what results are expected. These results may not be in revenue terms but helps the organization in generating revenue.
Any activity initiated should not be sporadic. It should be properly planned with guided interventions. It has been observed that unplanned activities creates high expectation among the village or rural community and ultimately ends with disappointments for both.
Please plan CSR activity with consequential effects to avoid displeasure.
