Hello HR friends,
Today, I would like to put before you one problem which happened with me and request you to
please comment on it. Please dont view it and leave without commenting. This problem even you
might have faced, facing , or would face in future somewhere in your work life.
When I was working in this XYZ company, we used to take apprentices for one year, and train them, made them work , they were paid stipend, and they were strictly taken for one year only. It was very rare that any apprentice rose to become permanent. 01 in 100.
I was working as HR Trainee, my period was also for only one year.
HR dept used to consist of only the HR manager and ME, and we had 3 plants in same campus..so much much workload..
We had this apprentice, who was a very good friend of mine, we gelled very much,, as he was from my homestate, that too was a reason for our deep friendship. He also had come to my house,, and we used to have lunch together in canteen... and had fun and frolic. together...
Now I was the main administrator of leave and attendance for all employees, trainees and apprentices... Everything was in my hands.
Now the thing is that we had a system in which the salary of only apprentices used to be cut if their leave used to exceed the quota given to them. We trainees and employees had quota but even if it exceeded, no cut used to be there from our salaries... the person who can cut the salaries of apprentices was ME and even my boss used to discourage me to cut the salaries of apprentices.
So this frnd of mine used to take lots of leave and go here and there searchign for jobs,, i as a strict employee marked all his leaves and when his leaves were over i told him that his LWP is to be done,, this frnd told me taht ravi u pls adjust it,, as it would cause him loss of pay... i already knew that the records maintained in company were not good, accurate and we rarely claimed the stipend given to apprentices from APP Board. But I was a very strict and true to my job employee,, i told our other frnd to tell this frnd strictly to comply with the rules and give a leave form as he was not giving,, then after our other frnd told he gave his leave form,, on which i marked LOP... like it is not that this frnd wanted to misuse his frndship with me,, i know that his heart was clear and he was perfect in his job,,, but somewhere i thought this would not be ok in interest of my loyalty to the company..
Many times I used to consult my boss regarding salaries of apprentices [ de were ITI and 12 passed ] and had salaries of Rs.1070 or 1500 only and in this they used to stay in rented room and as they were outsiders they had to arrange their accomodation ,food, etc in only meager 1000 rs.. and the company used their services to a great extent,, . so my boss used to tell not to cut their pays even if their quota exceeds,, I also used to fire the apprentices who used to come late, be repeatedly absent... but dis frnd was just like frnd to me,,, after his period got completed ,, and after one - two months my period got completed....
now i think that there was no need at all for being too loyal to the company,as may be i gained nothing from , as i never got any appreciation for any work done,, the apprentice is still my friend,,, but may be if you tell what should a HR do in this case,,,
Now even in my current company I have some friends, but I never allow them to access my computer,, or look at my papers as in my profile im handling documents of very sensitive / confidential importance type.. in my current profile I know that I can never be disloyal to my job, whatever may come , because of its importance and trust put in by my seniors ,and may be because of the environment that I am getting here,,, ,
but the old job was just for some XYZ which is not at all worth being loyal and that too,, for one year period..
So dont assume that from now onwards I have decided not to be loyal / sincere to my job,, i just want to say that the above XYZjob was not worth being too loyal....
even u must have relaxed / broken the rules for some good frnds working with u... [dont say no,, ]

Hi,
When you take from organisatonal point of view. This is encouraging the indiscipline.
Good motivation may resolve the problem. The company be acheiving its objectives by hiring low paid employees. The organisatioal goal should be more important than a departmental goal.
Further, when you see from angle of employees, for that level of salary, further cut may discourage employees.
I have high regards for your loyalty. However, patience is very precious thing. You should also excercise enough patience. Try to motivate your guys as much as possible.
You needs to be a good leader than a Boss. Boss is one who demands, leader is one who commands.

Hi, Friend
As a HR Personnel, You should follow the rules and regulations of the company properly otherwise you fell in to disciplinary proceedings so that
we are the creators of the HR systems and also implement the systems. If you do favour to your friend, then another friend also want same procedure then total system should be disturbed. so be alert regarding this type of situaions.

But it so happened, that in the specified company the management people themselves did not follow the rule, so my thinking became why the heck should I follow it,,,,

Hi,
As per my opinion, profession/work and friendship are two different things.
If I would have been in your place, I would have never allowed this kind of indiscipline, even though the colleague is a very very dear to me.
You can never be happy if you are dishonest and not loyal to others whether in professional or personal life.
You can be lenient towards the rules & regulations but can not be disloyal. Hence be able to differetiate between leniency and loyalty and act accordingly.

Hi
Yes, we all tend to break rules at some point of time for something in life which we give more importance to.
U know it depends on your perspective/thinking of the situation. Other people may think differently, but u have to decide whether u want to follow others i.e. be a part of the crowd; or u want to give the highest regard to ur decision i.e. stand out of the crowd, or u want the others to respect and follow ur decision. i.e. be a leader.
I think one should go for the 3rd type which would bring out ur leadership qualities as well as will not deviate from ur own ethical values.
I think that in the XYz company, it was good that u followed the strict rules and regulations and thought the company was urs. but don't u think u overdid this when u knew that u r going to be out within a yr. When ur senior did not object to the pay because he knew it is hard for apprentice to find a job, and in that one year everybody had to find a job. Ur friend may not be a kind of finding a job easily and that is why he took rules leniently.
whatever has happened is past!
In the present company, u r good to follow the ethics, but at the same time u have to draw a line where u have to decide ur leadership skills and the personal relations. U r right when u say u don't show ur private yet sensitive work to ur colleagues.
But don't be so involved in the company that u miss something which would have done good to u.
All the best!!

Dear friend
Great inner consciousness. Do what ever you want to do but always keep one thing in mind that you should not hurt any body. This any body may be your friend or your company.
Every body is of opinion that in company follow the regulations. Friendship and company rules are two different things.
I believe we can mix both friendship and company rules till both are on win win situation. Sanction leave even if he has already exhausted his/her allotted quota against their presence on when else are on off or on leave. He may be called for extra work against the leave.
Priority is work and that is of company's work. It is paid work and not a social work. We must return every penny received against our time purchased by some one. Be sincere to your job.
It seems that you are too static in following the rules. Rules are framed keeping in mind the general and normal conditions. See and think about the objective of making a rule.
Main thing is to achieve objective and any one's physical presence. Loyalty comes from inside of your heart. Loyalty in such cases should never be quoted as true follower of the written guide lines.
Please always seek guidance not the guidelines. This will help you to take right decision under adverse and unidentified situations.

Hi,
According to me what you did was perfectly correct, for which i would quote some reasons,
1) I have mentioned what was the use of following the rules none of them have followed and also no one as recognized you, according to me no will so easily recognisee the good efforts which again might happen 01 in 100 times. Don't wait for things to happen atleast by following the rules and regulations it will definitely help you to keep on doing the good work even when you reach the highest level in your life. Tell me what do you think on this..................
2) As quoted by sangeetha i think if you do this it will not help to improve the discipline in you organization. Because your best friend might just pass this information to other and such a case may not happen 01 in 100 times. Tell me about your views on this also...........
3) When it comes to the Rs 1000/1500 any particular employee will be knowing when he joins the company that he will be getting only that much and even sometimes less than that if at all he takes more leave, so they will be keeping their fianicial commitments to that particular amount only or even sometimes below. If at all your Boss insists you not to cut than do it too all such employees without their knowledge, but in my veiw do it only if they deserve and they are really worthy to the company else please cut the amount.
Now tell me what do you fell whether you should follow the rules or not irrespective of the out come...........................
