Dear Mukta,

"Workplace health" and "safety" are the two independent issues. Why would you like to club them together while designing a policy?

Workplace health depends on the following factors: -

a) Ventilation, hygiene and sanitation at the workplace. How the air in the office is tested? How frequently water testing is done?
b) Whether the office furniture is designed ergonomically
c) In the staff canteen whether or not the "food safety management systems" are followed as per ISO 22000.
d) Safety precautions because of the COVID-19 pandemic
e) As a part of the employee welfare, is an "on duty" doctor available in the office? What medical facilities are provided while on duty?

Mental health depends on the following factors: -

f) Per day hours of work put up by the employees, and how do you track the excess working hours? Is 5-day workweek hogwash? Though it is a 5-day workweek do the weekly hours are more than even a 6-day workweek?
g) The interpersonal environment in the company
h) Whether or not the managers are able to motivate their juniors
i) Craziness of the top leadership
j) As a part of the employee welfare, does the company provides counselling services to the employees? If yes, are these free or paid ones?
k) In case of the death of near and dear ones of the employees due to COVID-19, does the company shows due sensitivity or business remains as usual?

Workplace safety depends on the following factors: -

l) Whether or not a fire audit of the building is conducted every year
m) Whether or not an electrical safety audit conducted every year
n) Whether or not the women are provided transportation if they leave the office after 2000 hours (or as per the local rules)

I hope the above points will give you guidelines to design the policies.

Thanks,

Dinesh Divekar
