Hi Everyone,
Okay....now this may sound amateurish.....but here it goes....
There are times when employees in the organization have to stay up late because of work dependencies or project deadlines, as is common in many cos. Now the problem is, many a times when employees are late in coming to office and when I ask them the reason for it, they tend to say that we don't question them at the time when they work late so why do we question on their late arrivals. I am sure many of you would have encountered this clichéd question being asked by your employees, but yet I am not sure what can be a valid response to this.
Also, We do not have any option for flexi-work hours in our co.
Kindly pour in your suggestion for this.
Regards,
Pooja

Hi Vidhya,
Thanks for your response.
I forgot to mention this but on the day if an employee had worked for long hours then we pardon a late coming on next day(approval of immediate supervisor is needed).
However still employees complain abt it, on their other late comings too.I reason out with them by saying that they need to maintain office decorum.

Hi,
Do a little bit of math and find out how many are coming late and how many hours of productivity is affected daily, weekly, monthly and yearly thus affecting the turnover, business, and their increments and convey the same to the employees who cite this as a reason. Also, partially, since they are reporting late for work, the work is getting delayed further and hence deadlines are not met.
Also, maybe (I am not sure about your company's processes), delay in meeting deadlines could also be related to employees competency and their ability. If the mistake is on the company's part, such as overloading employees, you need to speak to the management and you can make the report timings changed, rather than having a flexible one, because some of them take overadvantage of the flexi-work schedule.

I beg to differ with the googly of Mr Malik.
Many a times it's organisation's need, poor planning or work distribution by seniors, emergency bulk orders, increased work load, recruitmenting incapable employee at low cost (?) , their poor training also results into long working hours.
(While saying this I surely donot exclude those who indeed lack efficiency, and keep their work pending despite all positives and deserve your solution).
In nut shell if Mr Malik's solution is applied without taking ground reality than as a HR one may win this argument but never the heart of employee. Mr Malk will excuse me for saying this that as a senior HR if you dissociate from late work order of the operational boss and say that I never asked you.............doesn't inspire a rational response

Hi,
I too face this problem in my organisation. Normally, it is used to say that going late is not the reason for coming late. But in my opinion, due to improper work schedule, unexpected meetings and lengthy telephonic conversation of the higher officials puts junior level employees in to a trouble of late sitting. If the work is allocated well within the time and not completed in the stipulated time then it reveals inefficieny of the staff. Otherwise, if the staff is forced to do work at the end of closing office hours then the employee should specially be permitted to come late in the morning.

dear mr sharma
you are absolutely right .the reply which i have given is totally worng if you will take HR point view in consideration.
if you talk ethically also my reply was not correct but
if you talk about discipline than one should come on time ,
let it be any hurdles.flexi office hours does not be made applicable to all industries.
in my personnel view late coming is habit.

Dear Mr.Malik,
Only the concerned staffs HOD knows how much amount of work their employee has done during his working hours.Sitting late and doing additional work has to be analysed properly.Say, whether he is working to complete his pending work or he is working to complete the work before due date(As instructed by his manager or management). Being in HR we cant talk about his productivity without consulting with his HOD ?
