Greetings!
Dear All,
I started my career with a job as HR manager in a KPO in Chandigarh. I have done MBA HR corros., in graduation I am B.Tech Biotechnology.
My area of work are:
Overall responsibility of the Administration,
Handling a team of more than 100 employees
Recruitment,
Payroll,
Induction,
Training and Development,
Hr Policies,
Appraisals,
Maintaining E- attendance records,
Maintaining Company’s decorum,
Vendor Management.
I am looking after two shifts i.e. day as well as night.
Moreover, there is no HR executive under me and I am looking after everything alone with direct reporting to the MD.
My salary is 13,000/- per month.
I want to ask all the seniors here that:
1) Do you think I am rightly paid according to my responsibilities? If no, then what should be my approx. salary?
2) Is Training and development and induction also comes under my responsibility? Isnt there specific trainers for this thing?
I really feels miserable sometimes as my MD takes work like a Personal Secretary from me and not as HR manager.
I am 24 years old , and he feels that I am a kid and will work as per his rules.
Please help.............. Its really a torture sometimes.
Thanks,
Vineet

Dear Shikha,
Thank you for your valuable comments. I think he really needs a PA, but I can't suggest that directly to him as his work is not hampered in any case. I do hope things will improve with time.

Dear Vineet,
Greetings!
1) Do you think I am being rightly paid according to my responsibilities? If not, then what should be my approximate salary?
Your pay is low. You are supposed to get around 25-35.
2) Is Training and Development and induction also under my responsibility? Aren't there specific trainers for this?
Yes, T&D is your responsibility. Since there is no HR Executive, Induction is also your responsibility.
As Shikha said, wait for some time; all situations will definitely improve.

Dear John,
My appraisal is due in the month of July 09. Let's see if I get a good increment. But even if it'll be good, I don't think it will be more than 18K. Hope for the best!
Can you please suggest if I can think of a job change now or should stick to the same company for more experience?
Thanks & Regards,
Vineet

Hi Vineet,
You haven't mentioned how much experience you hold. The pay would definitely depend on experience. If you started as a fresher with that pay, then it's fair enough. It's very difficult to get a break in HR, and if you are career-oriented, then you shouldn't worry about the pay initially until you gain enough experience. Whether you should move to another company or not depends on what hike you get, and also on how confident you are with your skills as an HR Manager. Let me know your experience, and then I can tell you if 18K is a decent pay or not.
Coming to your second question... Training and development and induction are also a part of the HR Manager's responsibilities. Induction is handled by the HR manager. When it comes to T&D, it depends on the kind and content of the training program. Based on that, we have different trainers. The role of HR in such cases is to coordinate the training programs, prepare training calendars, etc.

Dear Vineet,
Greetings!
As of now, don't go for a job change. Presently, you and your company are doing well. Regarding T&D - personality development, communication, and team building are supposed to be your responsibilities. If you are going for technical or language (language translator/behavioral training) training, then you have to depend on trainers.

Dear John,
Thank you for your suggestions. I think I should wait as all of you suggested. However, can I ask my employer for a salary raise, as all other managers in our company are getting above 40K, and receiving such a low salary also hampers my image in the company. You do not get the same respect when your salary is lower.
Thanks,

As recruitment and selection fall within your department, you need to advise your MD about the need for a PA in your company setup. For the time being, just gain the necessary exposure and experience with this company. For the record, it's a privilege to report directly to the MD. So, seize the chance to your advantage. Wishing you the best in your endeavors.

I think you should keep applying for new jobs with 2 years of experience and a salary of 13k. This amount is very minimal. Companies take advantage, as HR jobs are in demand, and people are willing to accept any package, especially in a generalist profile.

I think you have sufficient experience for applying to other companies. So, keep on applying to new jobs.
1. Yes, you are underpaid (Answer to your first question).
2. Yes, Training and Development (T&D) also includes in your job, as others said.
The minimum salary according to your profile is 18-23k in a city like Chandigarh, but it may vary from city to city. Seniors from other cities, please shed light on the salary issue.
Keep applying to new jobs until you find an appropriate one.

Hi Vinnet,
Salary mainly depends on your experience in this field. It doesn't mean that being a manager you should get a high salary. Other managers receive salaries depending on their performance, qualifications, and, moreover, their hands-on experience in the field. Training and Development (T&D) is solely your responsibility.
Take care of your responsibilities well and gain knowledge. In the future, you will have good paymasters, and one day you will succeed. Keep increasing your knowledge and experience.

Dear Vineet,
Kindly tell us about your company such as: business, manpower strength, and type of company (Ltd. / Pvt. Ltd., etc.).
Anyway, as far as your job is concerned, you are exceeding expectations. Never quit this job unless you have a better opportunity in hand. Do your work carefully and continue searching simultaneously.
Best wishes for you, and God bless you.

I must tell, you are into a right path.. keeping the work load apart, the kind of hold on all the HR process you are getting is a boon to any person seeking a great career in HR
Coming to your questions:
1. Firstly the 'factor' that does matter the compensation in the current scenatio is not your experience nor industry standards....but its just the "Affordability of your company" How much it can pay... Since we belong to costing centers the affordabilty of the small and medium companies are very sensible. Thus I can say that the salary you are drawing should be equally propotional to the business you are company is doing..
2. When it comes to T&D.. it also comes under HR manager, but many companies are seperating this team. The idea behind this seperation is the concentrated approach on the development of individuals. As i can understand that your company cant afford having a new team... so I think you have to handle the same... You could be more responsible for facilitating and coordinating and planning traininig programs. As per the training need find an SME in that area as a trainer.

Thank you, Clemence, Anamika, Bindu, Mr. Tiwari, and Naveen for your valuable advice. As Mr. Tiwari has asked, our company is a Knowledge Process Outsourcing (KPO) with a staff of 100 people; it is a Private Limited (Pvt Ltd.) company. I take note of this suggestion, as all of you have advised that I should gain experience first and continue my job search simultaneously.
Additionally, Clemence, thank you for mentioning the importance of my direct reporting to the Managing Director (MD). I had not considered that perspective before, and it may be beneficial to acquire that experience.
Thank you all,

Dear Vineet,
Really, it is not good what is happening to you. You should ask for a raise in salary assertively. Due to your service, they should consider it positively. It's time for your growth as well. But by God, don't be that kind of CEO as yours is. This situation will help you grow. Be positive and try to learn from the situation. Things will be better in the future. May you grow; it's my wish.

Hi Vineet,
I guess you pretty much got the answers from other friends. Adding to that, I just want to say that one of your problems is that your MD is treating you like a PA and as a kid.
Buddy, I would suggest that you try to use this opportunity. It may sound funny, but still, as an MS, he will come up with a lot of experience and skills. So, try to grasp it and learn as much as possible from him. After some time, the same position and MD won't be with you, but your learning will be with you.
All the very best,
Ram.

Dear Vineet,
We should not compare our salary with others. If you do, your motivation levels and performance will go down, which may not be good for your career. If you have gained all the experience and there is nothing more to learn in that company, then try to change the company. Even if you change, no one can offer you more than 18000/-, i.e., 30% of your present salary.
Working as a secretary, you can make the Managing Director depend on you, and your image and respect will rise. I think your Managing Director has the final authority to decide on increments, and your work is directly monitored by him, so there is a chance of a good hike. Please wait and think before taking a leap. All the best.

Dear Vineet,
First of all, let me know if you are enjoying your job. If you are, then financials won't come in between. As far as I am concerned, you have a great opportunity to learn, and you should also learn "how to say no." That is, when you are handling all these tasks, you should influence your boss to hire a dedicated secretary to relieve you from that assignment. Additionally, consider whether the organization is able to afford more staff in terms of capacity to pay.
Regarding training and development, you are the one to understand and identify the training requirements, formulate a training calendar, hire someone if needed, and complete the training process. Induction is also your responsibility. Focus on manufacturing processes, productivity enhancement, reducing downtime, career management, multi-skilling, and other major tasks of any HR professional. By presenting the bigger picture to your boss, you can suggest relieving you from routine administrative tasks (non-value-added work) and request approval for an additional assistant.
Any issues can be resolved through logical thinking, planning, action, and convincing arguments. Remember, you are young, with a long professional life ahead of you, so don't rush. Build a strong foundation to create your empire.
Best wishes,
