Hi....ur experience as a Counselor surly taught you something so it should definately be counted. You are more competent than a person who is just a fresher. you just need to give a hard shot by preparing about the exact profile for the HR Job. And it will also depends upon the position of HR u r going for. As a counselor u must have learnt to creat a good relations with the human. Inthis way u can go for the employee reations( HR) also............Good Luck

Hi Anju
Your experience will not be counted for an HR Job.
If you show in your profile some thing which is related to HR (eg: recruitment for the internal staff, behavioral training to the staff, student etc.)
then you can always claim about your experience as HR.

Dear Anju,
You have experience as an academic counselor which may not be of much use in the industry where other counseling competencies are needed. On that count you may not be helped out for taking up a HR job but let me add, experience is experience which helps in terms of exposure, maturity, handling people, confidence etc,etc...so,you are definitely better off than a fresher and stand a good chance comparitively.

RGS.

Hi Anju.
the answer of your question apparantly is "No". Counseling is not all about HR. Counseling is a part of HR. Offen HR uses this to motivate employee in case of low moral, low productivity, absenteeism ect.
There are some acadamic institutions are recruiting counselor whoes main job is to sell their courses to the prospective candidates rather than to suggest best alternative. they have some target too..But dont take it otherwise and dont lose your heart. you can show to your interviewer that from this exp your have learned the basic behaviour of human beings which is most important for being a successful HR but side by side you have to horn up the other skills of HR also.
regards
