There is no labor law which mandates group medical coverage for employees. Depending on salary conditions (say Rs 21,000 or less), employees should be covered by ESI schemes, which is not a group medical cover but is independent. Similarly, for employees not covered by ESI due to salaries exceeding Rs 21,000, a separate insurance policy under the Employees' Compensation Act may be taken. Insurance under the Employees' Compensation Act is mandatory only for employees mentioned in Schedule II of the Act. Moreover, it does not provide medical coverage for the medical hospitalization expenses of the workers.
