LMV License and procedure for forklift operators - there is no separate license issued from RTO

Hi, I want to know the actual procedure for forklift operators because our operators have LMV licenses. In West Bengal, there is no separate license issued from RTO for safety measures. Therefore, there is a need to correct and authorize the license. Please suggest to us.

I doubt whether the forklift operation requires a license. Forklifts are used within warehouses. Therefore, ordinary LMV licenses are sufficient to operate the forklifts. However, you may check with the manufacturer of the forklift for the licensing requirements to operate the forklifts.

As per my understanding, a forklift falls under the category of industrial use machines. For operating a forklift, the driver must have a commercial license, as using a forklift within premises, including the precincts, requires proper certification. It is advisable to verify with the local authority (factory or labor) to obtain a clear understanding of the regulations surrounding forklift operation.

As per IS 6305 Part 1, for forklift operations, the operator should have an HMV.

Is the regular four-wheeler driving license sufficient for driving a forklift on the factory premises?

Forklift operators do need a valid license to operate a forklift. Some states in India issue separate licenses for forklift operators, while others do not. It is up to the management to decide whether the person needs an LMV or HMV (NT) to operate a FLT on their premises.

As per OSHA 1926.1427, a FLT operator shall be trained and shall have a valid license/certification.
