Feeling Undervalued: Should I Talk to HR About My Lower Salary Compared to a Junior Colleague?

sharayu-roy
I have recently joined a company in a senior position that is offering me a lower salary compared to my junior colleague. The junior, in the sense that she has less experience (1-2 years) compared to me, with 4 years of experience in the same industry. The salary offered for both of us is below market standards. I feel this is a huge insult to my experience and time spent learning the skills. Also, I didn't have bargaining power or negotiate my offer better as I got laid off due to Covid and was desperately looking for a job for 6 months.

What should I do?

Should I discuss this issue with my manager/HR and ask for a raise? Should I seek new job opportunities?

Addressing Temporary Career Setbacks

Such temporary setbacks in a career are often present. Having just agreed to accept the terms offered to you, expressing displeasure over it does not bode well. You have acquired a senior position in the process, and it is time for you to prove your worth and then negotiate effectively for what you believe is fair.
