OT for Security Guards - agency is asking the guards to continue duty since there is no replacement guard available

Dear Friends,

We have recently moved to an 8-hour shift pattern from 12 hours for our security team across all locations. However, soon after the change, many guards are unwilling to continue duty due to the salary cuts. Consequently, the agency sometimes asks the guards to continue duty as there are no replacement guards available. I would like to inquire whether overtime should be paid to the guards in this case or if it should be considered normal duty, given that this change was advised by the agency and not demanded by the client.

Additionally, I would appreciate knowing if there are any laws specifying the maximum number of overtime hours a person can work.

Thank you.

It is standard 8 hours of work per day and overtime for duty beyond that. Limitations on overtime are laid down in the Shops and Establishment Acts, Factories Act, etc., depending on applicability.

Dear Friend,

As per the Security Guard Board Act, after 8 hours of duty, overtime (OT) is applicable and payable at double the regular rate.
