Career Question - Is is fine to switch job to "Talent Acquisition" role from "HR Generalist"?

One of my friends is looking for a job change for a long time. She is working as an "HR Generalist" with one year of experience. The number of job openings for HR roles in the market is very low for her current position. Would it be okay for her to switch to a "Talent Acquisition" role since there are numerous openings for this position?

If she has enough exposure in an HR Generalist profile, she should look forward to working on HR Business Partner projects such as talent acquisition and management, performance management, learning and development, cross-functional development programs, and organizational design. While economic and job security are criteria for switching to a different function, aptitude for a particular function is also key to excellence. Therefore, she should consider what she has a flair for and manage her switch accordingly.

It all depends on interest, capability, and flair for a particular job. Openings will always be available for a person with talent, whether in HR or talent acquisition. The person concerned should truly identify his/her capability and act accordingly.

She is much more interested in a Generalist or HRBP role, but as she is not finding any openings for a long time, she is willing to go into Talent Acquisition, for which there are numerous opportunities available. Kindly suggest how to find suitable vacancies for the roles of HRBP/HR Generalist as many 'Limited' companies do not post jobs on Naukri.com or through mass mailing.

Availability of the job is the issue here.

In the process of talent acquisition, she may develop contacts for work-related opportunities and find a job to her liking.

Talent management is a subset of the HR function as such.

Many vacancies do not get publicized, and only contacts prove helpful to learn about potential vacancies.

The unavailability of jobs in an HR generalist role may not be a long-lasting phase. If she currently handles talent acquisition along with other areas in her profile, I would not suggest a hasty switch to any other specialist role at this juncture but rather advise waiting for a more opportune time. Her focus should be on honing her skills in all critical HR functions to become a capable professional ready for a higher level of responsibility when the right opportunity arises, hopefully soon.

While accepting the views of Mr. Vinaya and other senior colleagues here, she should keep in mind that even during a slump in the job market, an employee can always reap the rewards by being patient and making the most of the best available options and opportunities. A generalist role in HR could be the best fit for her since she has an interest in it. Talent acquisition is undoubtedly a viable option in today's workforce.
