Hi Manibalan,
To calculate the fire load, you can use the below formula:
qc = Σmv Hv / Af
Where:
qc = Fire load density (MJ/m²)
mv = Total mass of the combustible material (Kg)
Hv = Total calorific value of the combustible materials (MJ/Kg)
Af = Total floor area (m²)
The calorific value reference can be taken from Annex A-1, Part 4 of NBC 2016. However, the above formula is not mentioned anywhere in NBC 2016. The code is also silent on how to calculate the fire load and how the value of fire load/fire load density can be used by the various types of occupancies for the design and installation of Fire Protection Systems.
In NBC 2005, there was Table 26 in Part 4 providing Reference Values for Fire Load Density. This table was removed from NBC 2016 without offering any alternative reference table. Therefore, even though you have the value of Fire Load Density, there is no standard value reference against which you can compare it and take further proactive measures in India. Notably, there are referral values available in the NFPA Fire Protection Handbook - 20th edition (2008).
We will delve into these topics in detail during our workshop on NBC 2016. For more details about the workshop, please visit the link below. If you are interested in participating, please let me know:
