Before delving into "Design and Development," I believe it is important to undertake some courses on quality or Six Sigma, etc. Does your testing department cover quality as well? Currently, you may be focusing on the "Quality of Conformance"; however, a stint in the quality department will enhance your understanding of the "Quality of Design," which is equally crucial.
