Dear Rasika,
Normally in a merger, the employees are balanced and care taken that no one lose their jobs.
But in a few cases, the company which takes over or has the larger investment, they have a say in which departments employees they do not want. This is already specified in the merger terms. Therefore approach the management, take the feedback and then you will know if you have any trouble or not.

Dear Rasika,
Don't be disheartened, now is the time to invest all your energies in searching for an alternative to rediscover yourself and launch yourself in the market.
Start your networking and be employed before the the news is conveyed to you. Remember that you still need to give them notice period (thou it would be waived off)

If your manager has been so categorical, you should have started your job search long ago ! What are you waiting for ?

Dear, honestly I don't want to sound pessimistic, however, it's always prudent to be futuristic recognising & realising what is imminent. That is to say one should visualise and think ahead what could be possible and what not. Frankly I have no solution to annul your fear for the simple fact that we cannot sit in judgment and impossible too. If your expectation from us is a few encouraging words, fine, that's plenty. But you cannot be ignorant, that's not going to solve your problem.

That apart, you have not indicated how many years of service you have rendered in your present co., and experience gained there, subject to this, on the optimistic side, why don't you analyse rather list out reasons as to why the new co. should retain you over-powering your own Manager & her views ? Could you ? There could be possibility that a new co. may retain people like you leaving out comparatively costly people like your manager. Many co. view in these lines to cut down costs and prop up its image to look younger in terms of average age of employees. It could be justified going by gut feeling that the new co. for sure should have their man power policies in place and only junior fellows might be needed to implement in the merged co. and so on. One more thing is, you are yet to get the notice of termination, I presume, so the day of happening is yet to arrive till such time you have to keep guessing. It's customary that in the events of mergers the authorities used to circulate the offers or invite the options and seek willingness for takeover to the merged co. from concerned. And issue notices to those not finding a place in the merged co. In all probability those who are going to be left might be compensated. In case you are not getting while others get them, then you would know your chances. Hope for the best.

On the other hand, pessimistic side - you have them already. It's nothing wrong to get prepared for the worst relying on the package to be offered. Who knows you might get better placements if you were to be left out.

All the very best.
