I work for an Indian company in Bangalore. My husband has traveled to the UK a month back. Now, I am planning to travel to the UK. In my company, they have agreed to 3 months of work from home (in the UK), but they do not agree to long-term work from home in the UK. My salary would be credited to my Indian account, and this is not an official deputation.

My question is, if I work from home in the UK and resign from my job after 3 months, stating that I cannot travel back to India due to health issues, what would be the procedure to return the company laptop and complete the resignation process from the UK without traveling to India?

Have you disclosed to your HR department that you wish to resign after three months of your work-from-home period? What did they say? What is the policy on employee separation in your company?

Is it possible for you to surrender the laptop and other company property now and then move to the UK? Can you use your personal laptop for official work? Is this possible?

Is it possible for you to resign now and give a three-month notice period? This will give HR sufficient time to look for your replacement.

Please explore these possibilities and confirm your views.

Dear Divekar Sir,

Sorry to interrupt. If she is submitting the resignation and going to the UK, then she might have to pay the Notice Period Pay as she will be absent from duties. In this case, it is suggested that she should disclose the fact that she is going to resign after three months. During these 3 months, she will work from the UK.

The only question is the Laptop. Either she can use her personal one or carry the Company's, with the cost (of course reasonable) of the same deducted from her F&F as she is not in a position to return it.

Further to what Dinesh V Divekar and Ramakant mentioned, there's one aspect that begs clarity/clarification from you.

When you have already made up your mind to resign after 3 months, why are you eager to adopt work-from-home for these 3 months? Was it your or the company's idea? Why don't you just quit and move?

Or if serving the Notice Period in India is the issue, I think Dinesh V Divekar has already given the solution to it -- serve the NP by work-from-home mode.

There's a quote that deserves bearing in mind: "A lie always needs an accomplice; only truth can stand alone."

This emanates from your plan to feign health issues to resign later. You already are able to see one consequence -- how to return the laptop. Are you sure there won't be others when you reach that stage? I am sure there will be -- and you will end up inventing more such bluffs [if the word 'lie' is too strong for you].

Hope you get the point.

If, for whatever reason(s), doing the job for these 3 months is important for you [not for the NP reasons], just be upfront and discuss with your HR and handle with transparency.

It always pays to preempt a situation rather than creating it and then going about resolving it (that's a politician's domain, not a professional's). :-)
