Does Admin Experience Useful For HR Career?

Hello all Seniors,

Please help me and save my career. I have completed my MBA in HR and currently working in a small company as an Assistant Executive in HR. However, my job title is only HR, and it does not involve any HR-related tasks. Therefore, I am looking to change my job. I have previously inquired about this in one of our discussion sections, and while many have suggested that I should continue in my current role, I am unsure.

If I continue in this position, will my experience as an Administrator be beneficial in securing a job as an HR Executive? Is administrative experience considered relevant for HR roles? Can I build a career in HR starting from an Administrator position? Should I consider changing my job before it is too late?

Please provide me with guidance as I am feeling very confused and uncertain about the right path to take. Your help is greatly appreciated.

In some organizations, when there is no HR department, administrators would handle some of the HR functions such as induction, leave management, joining formalities, training, etc. Could you provide details of your job responsibilities? Hello All,

The profile involves payroll, issuing ID cards, preparing salary slips, opening bank accounts, leave management, preparing vouchers, maintaining records of paid bills, handling phone calls, and all other administrative activities.

Is this relevant experience? What should I do?

Dear Kunal,

Keeping various registers, liaising with government departments, conducting in-house inquiries, housekeeping, and other activities are also useful for your career. I don't think that this experience will harm your career. However, don't be too choosy about the profile.

If you really want to get into hardcore HR in a good company where HR functions like performance appraisals, compensation management, T&D, employee relations, recruitment, etc., are prominent, then I think you should start looking for a change before it's too late. The more work experience you have, the higher the interviewer's expectations will be. In most companies, you might not get selected not because you are incapable but because you lack experience in certain areas. This could make changing jobs very challenging. You would need to prove yourself exceptionally well to clear the interview, especially with many experienced HR professionals in the market.

It might not be that difficult for you if luck is on your side. I am sharing this advice based on my experience. I believe you should consider changing jobs.

Administrative experience might not really be harmful to your career, but in essence, what you have listed are not core HR functions. If there are possible career growth opportunities within your organization, you might inform your immediate supervisor of your desire, and opportunities could be given to you to learn and practice these HR functions.

If this is not allowed, you can start looking for another job. In the meantime, start learning from the web. There are good HR websites that can teach you about these functions. You just need to Google "HR functions," and you will come across many websites where you can start learning and practicing bit by bit before you get that job you are passionate about.

I have gone through your write-up. In the long run, the admin will not fetch you any HR. To be frank, first, you should opt for an industrial background in HR. The experience will lead you to a multifaceted HR job exposure. Of course, for the time being, it's okay.

Based on my experience, Admin work is the foundation of HR. Currently, you are handling payroll, employee ID cards, leave management, filing work, cash management, etc. It doesn't matter.

One thing, you should be clear. I believe you have recently started your career. Get more articles and information about performance appraisal, etc., and please ensure clarity on all subjects.

Wait for the right time and update your resume with detailed descriptions of the work you have done:

- Employee Relations
- Employee Data Management
- Statutory Compliances
- Policy Making
- Payroll Processing
- Maintaining MIS Reports
- Leave Management
- Events Management

I think most of the profile-related tasks align with what you are currently doing in your present company. Gather the remaining information/articles and get prepared on that.

Your suggestion is really good, but here there is no HR department, as the company is very small. There are no HR policies. Every decision is taken by the director. I don't have any role in HR. I am even called the office manager. I really don't like this term. I want to transition into core HR. However, until I find another opportunity, I have to continue in this role. I have gone through your work profile and feel you are doing a clerical-level job, which is initially alright during the beginning of a career. But as you grow in your organization, you must expand your job, and then you can enrich your role. Since you graduated in HR, focus on HR initiatives. Discuss honestly with your seniors to assign higher responsibilities. If your management allows you to take on these HR activities, continue with the same enthusiasm. If you don't receive any response, then you will know the answer.

Don't fall in love with your company, but love your job. This approach will help you grow in your career.

Sometimes, it happens that in small organizations, you will be recruited as an HR executive but you will get no chance to work in hardcore HR. The reason behind this is that these companies don't consider the HR department as important to them. This attitude always creates problems.

You can learn all the writable job work in 6 months to 1 year. However, administrative work is very difficult to learn as it requires extensive experience. You should continue with your job.
