Workplace First Aid Compliance and Medical Facilities: Guidelines and Requirements

SSM1975
Dear Sirs,

Our metalworking company employs more than 700 workmen. We have an OHC center but are yet to employ a doctor and nurse. There is a private hospital approximately 3 km away from the facility. Now, please guide me on the following questions:

1. How many first aid boxes should I have in the facility?
2. What are all the minimum items I should have in the ambulance?

Please advise.

Regards,
SSM

In every factory, there shall be provided and maintained first-aid boxes or cupboards equipped with the prescribed contents. These should be readily accessible during all working hours. The number of such boxes or cupboards to be provided and maintained should not be less than one for every one hundred and fifty workers ordinarily employed at any one time in the factory.

Dr. Hitendra Patel,

Would you mind sharing information on the thread itself for the benefit of all members?

One first aid box is required for every 150 employees, and one ambulance seat is needed for 500 workers according to the Factory Act.

Or better still, you could just outsource this bit of the work. I had a similar problem, and I got an appropriate institution to come check the place out, the type of work that goes on in each site or department, and they provided the needed first aid boxes. You might think it is too costly to outsource it, but it is beneficial in the long run.

All the best.

Dear Dr. Hitendra Patel,

I am seeking your valuable information on the following matter: we have a canteen in which we employ housekeeping women to serve food. We are now looking to have them undergo medical check-ups. Could you please advise on the specific tests that should be conducted and the frequency at which these check-ups should occur?

Thank you in advance.

Regards,
SSM.

Please let me know if the total number of staff, including 500 employees, is also considered. We have 2 units with a total of 500 employees - 175 staff and 325 workers. Do we need to hire a doctor for this setup?
varagantimadhu@yahoo.co.in
Whether the number of employees is 175 or 500, engaging a medical consultant is a must under the Factories Act. The essential medicines that are to be maintained in the first aid box are:

1. Cotton rolls of different sizes.
2. Gauze cloth
3. Roller bandage
4. Spirit bottle
5. Thermometer
6. Wooden splints for use during fractures to immobilize the organ
7. Savlon bottle
8. Soframycin or any other ointment prescribed by the doctor
9. Some tablets for fever, headache, abdominal pain, vomiting, Sorbitrate to treat chest pain
10. Scissors
11. Band-aid, etc.

Madhusudan
