The Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD) came into being on 1st July 2000. Its predecessor, the Institute of Personnel and Development, was granted chartered status and became the first chartered institute of the new millennium. The CIPD has more than 116,000 members and is the professional body for all those specialising in the management and development of people.
The CIPD is committed to being the leading, best-practice professional institute in the UK and Ireland. It exists to help its members improve the performance of their organisations and through them help increase the productivity levels of the whole economy. Its central message is that people mean business.
There is now strong evidence that progressive people management and development policies are the key to sustainable success in the emerging service-sector oriented knowledge economy.
The CIPD also advises Government and businesses at UK and European level on employment policies and plays a key role in developing both national and European-level employment strategies.
The CIPD's members are drawn from every sector of the UK economy, both public and private - with many acting in key strategic roles within their organisations. The CIPD aims through its research, publishing and conferences, to provide a better understanding of the key workplace issues for members, opinion formers and the wider public.
The Institute is responsible for the professional qualifications of the personnel profession and also provides a range of leading-edge training courses, workshops and seminars designed for personnel specialists, trainers, line managers and support staff at all levels.
