Hi Ashmita,

Which type of advance are you asking about?

1. Long Travel Allowance can be drawn for travel on official duty, travel on leave with LTC, medical advance, or office use.
2. Long-term advance is a welfare scheme to meet the financial requirements of staff members.

Thanks,
Basant

Hi Ashmita,

LTA is a monetary benefit given by an employer. Here are the LTA rules:

1. For claiming LTA, an employee needs to take a minimum of 5 days of leave, excluding Saturdays and Sundays.
2. Leave should be approved by the immediate supervisor.
3. LTA is basically one month's basic salary of an employee. For example, if my basic salary is Rs. 15,000, I am eligible for a Rs. 15,000 LTA claim.
4. LTA covers only to and fro travel tickets; taxi bills are not fully reimbursed as only a certain amount, as per the Government of India policy, is reimbursed.

Please note the details for LTA
the leave permissible is dependent on the company's policy.
LTA entitlement payable for the year is equivalent to one month basic.
LTA is permissible on two travel journeys in a block of 4 calendar years.
Minimum of 3 days leave(PL) should be applied for to avail the benefit for claiming LTA exemption.
The allowance is restricted to the shortest route of travel either by First Class AC by Train or by Economy Class Air Fare.
Employees can claim exemption on LTA based on the submission of bills and providing for proof of travel for journeys undertaken.
Family members are eligible to avail this benefit i.e. employee’s Spouse and children and dependent parents, brothers, sisters of the individual.
 The proof of documents required for claiming exemption on LTA
o Tickets and Boarding Pass in case of Air Travel (Economy Class).
o Original Tickets in the case of rail journey.

Hi all,

We have planned to implement the policy of compulsory holidays for staff members, wherein we would be providing one week off with tickets and accommodation reimbursements for staff members and their families. I would request you to send me a document that has proper guidelines to implement such an initiative.

Thanks in advance.

Dear Sir,

My query is regarding Leave Travel Allowance (LTA). If I have not selected the LTA component in my CTC, can I still claim the LTA for tax exemption?

Veerendra.

Dear Asmita,

LTA in the insurance term means Leisure Travel. Do reach out to me for any overseas travel details :icon1:

The allowance is restricted to the shortest route of travel either by First Class AC by Train or by Economy Class Air Fare.

Does anyone know how this is calculated? Or where can one find the guidelines for this calculation?

Just for better illustration: let's say I traveled by taxi from Delhi to Hyderabad. Now, the IT rule states that they would pay as the cost of "the shortest route of travel either by First Class AC by Train or by Economy Class Air Fare."

Now, if I look at the reference for trains leaving New Delhi to Hyderabad and its fare, the amount paid to me around Rs 8000/- looks much less than what I should be eligible for 1st AC class train fare (the number of persons traveling are 4, cost x 4).

Now, where can I find this guideline which made the finance team arrive at a figure of 8000/- instead of the cost that shows for 4 people to and fro journey?

If the travel was through a private cab, will the exemption that needs to be considered be equal to that of a 1st class A/C ticket?

If there are different costs for different trains traveling to the same destination, which one will need to be considered?

I would like to know LTA rules in India. As per the rules, LTA can be claimed twice in a calendar year. This means if my basic salary is 15,000 in one year and 17,000 in the next year, my eligibility is for 15,000 + 17,000 = 32,000 INR for LTA. So, when I claim the LTA reimbursement, should I claim 15,000 + 17,000 = 32,000 and avail the exemption of 32,000 INR for that year? Please reply on an urgent basis.

Hi,

Our company declared 1 month basic as LTA. Will the LTA amount be proportionally reduced with loss of pay or will the full basic amount be paid?

Hi all,

Can I claim the LTA for 2009-10 by clubbing it with my LTA for 2010-11 and for the travel I did this year (10-11), i.e., if my basic in 09-10 was Rs. 10,000/- and this year for 10-11 is Rs. 12,000/-, can I claim an amount of 10,000 + 12,000 = Rs. 22,000/- for travel I made this year?

Also, I did not avail any leave in 2009-10 as I just joined the company and did not have much leave.

Regards,
Ltreginald

In my company, I have applied for LTA. Since last year, I have only worked 217 days. Management is saying that I can't apply for LTA because I have not completed 240 working days in the last year. They granted me 7 PL on a pro-rata basis (as per company policy, an employee should take a minimum of 6 days PL for claiming LTA). Please tell me whether I'm eligible for LTA or not as well as for the bonus also.
