Dear Members,

International Workers' Day is a celebration of labour and the working classes that is promoted by the international labour movement and occurs on May 1st every year. May 1st is a national public holiday in more than 80 countries, but some of those countries have declared the public holiday officially known as Labor Day or some similar variant In India, We, in India, have officially only 3 National Holidays (26th Jan,15th Aug and 2nd Oct) but there is one or two states, where the 1st May have been declared as National Holiday. On this day, the States of Maharashtra and Gujarat celebrate a holiday as both the states have attained statehood in 1960.

However on this day, banks and other public organisations in Assam, Bihar, Goa, Karnataka, Kerala, Manipur, Pondicherry, Tamil Nadu, Tripura, West Bengal and Orissa observe a holiday. Most of other states organise some kind of fuctions to celebrate the occassion and for the remebrance of the history behind it.

Manufacturing Units , Industrial establishments will remain closed on May 1st. Organisation may treat this as a restricted holiday since this is not a national holiday thus not mandatory.

There is no central Act in India covering National & festival holidays .All depend on the provisions of the state laws on this in the concerned state.
