Exploring Foreign Language Learning, Translation Services, and Communication Skills

Hello,

Can anybody advise me on which is the best foreign language to learn, either for a hobby or in case an opportunity arises for an interpreter or translator job? I am based in Chennai. From what I found out through the internet, French is considered the best language. Can anybody help me? Also, I want to know if I can learn the same from someone who is already an expert in the language.
