Should I Take the Job Offer or Finish My MBA? Seeking Advice from Fellow HR Students

Hi all,

This is Gaurav from Bangalore. I am currently pursuing my MBA in HR and am in my second year. I have received an offer in the field of my choice (recruitment in an IT company) for a decent package suitable for a fresher like me. The CTC is 1.8 Lakh per annum. Now, I am in a dilemma whether to continue my education or accept this offer. In terms of my MBA and exams, there will be no problems or conflicts. My college allows me to work. Can you help me decide what I should do?

Congratulations on the job!! :D I would suggest that you finish your exams and then join this company. Until that time, you can ask them to wait, as companies generally do so. It becomes very difficult to complete your studies and concentrate on that part which is very important, as this is your specialization year. Whatever you have learned until now are general things; specialized subjects will start now and need proper attention. So, wait until finishing your MBA, and with God's blessings, you will get much better offers. :)

If you ask me, the answer is YES. If you just want to finish your study and then try gaining experience and search for a better company, all this is going to take time. This generation requires speed, quality, domination, and mobility to get settled. Hard work is required. Never look for shortcuts.

Finally, whatever people advise you, the final decision is yours. If you think you are capable of working hard and you want to speed up things to be on par with the best in HR, I would say not only books will help you. The real action in life will make you HARD CORE.

Hi Gaurav,

I have seen many make this mistake and pay heavily later. Finish your studies and then get a job. You will not only get a better package but also have a good degree in your hands. Don't get lured into this seemingly good opportunity - nothing is worth compromising your education. Enjoy your college days, as there will be no going back once you enter into your work life.

Tell the company that you can join only after finishing your exams - if they don't agree or try to lure you out - their intentions are nothing good for you.

Well, my confusion was about two things.

One, my college is flexible, and I don't have to worry about the exams as well as the attendance. I would get my degree. But my concern is more than that; it's the fact that am I losing out on the theory side of it or the practical experience is significantly better than what I learn in the classrooms.

Two, my perception was that by the time I officially finish my MBA, I would have already gained a year's experience, which would definitely give me an edge.

In my view, you should take the job as it will give you practical insight without losing your MBA degree.

Hi Gaurav,

Practical experience is no doubt important. But you also need classroom experience, I think, because many times the professors teaching you also pass on their practical experience to you. As someone who has benefited hugely from a couple of professors like this, I think you should be patient. I don't think one year's practical experience when you should have been 'officially' attending college will amount to much.

According to me, it basically depends on the 'quality' of the classroom education you're receiving. If it's not good, if it's just 'dictation-type' of classes, then maybe you could accept this offer. BUT DO NOT BE TEMPTED BY THE SALARY. I think the criteria you should focus on is the quality of the classes in your college.

Dear Gaurav,

A proper evaluation of your problems/prospects should be done to come to a decision. It seems your college is too flexible on attendance. I personally feel that you must complete the studies before searching for a job. One should not miss classroom activities of management studies. Being in the college till completion of your studies should make you a better candidate in the job market.

The other aspect is whether you need to work right now. If there is a compelling need for that, you can think of working. Do not join just because you are offered a job. Hope you will take the best decision.

I understand you are excited about getting to work early and the pay too. But understand that there are more areas in HR along with recruitment. I suggest you have a thorough understanding of the plethora of good areas that you can explore rather than jumping at that offer. Think long term - are you keen about recruitment or just that the offer has come your way? Think big.

CHR and Archana are right. I myself am a fresh MBA and got an offer from a reputed lighting and luminaries company and a reputed bank in my second semester with a similar package. But my mom said, "Complete your studies first; offers will keep on coming. If you are confident of your capabilities, these offers will keep on coming when you complete the course." The industry today is such that there is no dearth of opportunities for anyone capable of performing and has the right skills and qualifications to justify a profile.

Hence, I sincerely suggest that you complete your studies first and don't be in two minds about this because it will affect your concentration levels in your studies as well. Keep calm, be patient, and remember that "patience always pays."

Hi Gaurav,

I also received some offers during my MBA course, but all my HR faculties and other experts advised me to concentrate on my studies. We will receive great offers, so don't worry about the package. Who knows, you may get a better package and a better job. Therefore, it's best to concentrate on your studies.
