Termination of the said HR guy certainly is undesirable. But an HR professional must consider the culture of the organization before taking any step. Respect to heirarchy, culture and profile of the organization should never be lost sight of in any initiative. It is not to suggest people should not be creative and think out of box. Let this learning further strenthen professional skill and attitude of the said HR Guy. Everything is not lost by losing one job opportunity. He must come out stronger.

The MD was absolutely right in doing what he did... It's not about this HR guy... its about what is right and what is wrong.... Imagine if everyone in TCS started writing hello notes to everyone else in the organization...I can only thik of one word - Chaos. Being a HR guy, he should have had enough sense to understand the impact of such a thing at an organziational level. The second thing is you dont go and start doinf whatever you feel like in a new organization. You first settle down, understand the organization and it's culture and then you act!!!. The MD terminated this person not because of the letter but because of the immaturity exhibited by this person. An immature HR is more dangerous than an incompetent one.

My advice to the guy in question.... Grow up!!!! HR is a critical function and there is absolutely no room for immaturity and ther is definitely no room for people who think HR is a easy way to become popular. You need to decide whether you want to be Popular oran effective HR because you can never be BOTH!!!

Too early to jump to a conclusion. I think you haven't read the entire article properly. Request you to kindly go through it once again.
You are talking about immaturity ? what kind of maturity the MD and HR Head has shown ? Its a clear case where one person who has joined become the target of MD's frustration and HR Head incompetent to save her own person.
Termination is always followed by final warning, in this case it didnt happened, secondly people learn from there mistakes; in my view if i was MD i would have discussed the matter with HR Head where the new guy should have been appreciated for his young thoughts and creativity which would have boosted his confidence followed by inducting the young talent with the org. culture and policies.
This would have lead the young person knows his mistake and the organization would have benefited with his services.
I know this guy in person; hence strongly disagree with your comments.

Let me get to the point straight.

I think the MD might be having a bad day in the office or just be jealous at the attention a junior that too a contract employee is receiving in the organisation. But whatever the reasin might be as a MD he should have lot more patience and maturity in dealing with people.

Even now TCL offers to take the candidate back, he should not join as it would not look good. At the same time, he should show the MD that he is not GOD and just another employee in a big company. No matter what his credentials are and no matter who he is, he is an employee and is reporting to some one else.

Let us all try and do this, if some one can bring this to the notice of Mr. Ratan Tata and let him know about the king of people running his organisation I'm Mr. Tata would respond. Let us all use our networks and bring this to the notice of Tatas.
And at the same time, plese keep the media away from this as any exposure to the media might jeopardise the HR guys whole career.

What ever is done, do keep me posted.

I read the real incident and other's opinion & am sad to know :(

I am a little bit confused as well about the guy’s introductory email, but I have to say it’s just a childish decision to be terminated moreover it's been done verbally. The MD himself has been showing unprofessionalism by means of not to welcome his introductory mail as well as created halo effect in front of all TCL’s employees that he is one of the Managing Directors whose not having kind nature for his employees.

To send introductory email to the staff, seniors & even to MD/ CEO, is a common & a very professional way to introduce our self by electronically mails them.

Well one thing I noticed that the guy who suffered this experience needed to modify his introductory email, because his email somewhat showed an informal way to introduce himself; as he sent copy to seniors so he had to be a bit formal in his introductory email along with short & precise. However his email shows he is a cool guy & wish to work in a cool environment but as far as my knowledge & experience is concerned this would have mentioned in a short way…. And here I need some suggestions upon it either I am presuming right?

But despite of it I am still not in favor of MD’s immediate action, as that was not a solution to be terminated, even not as an issue as MD created to call in his cabin. In a professional manner he would have asked to HR head to guide the guy about his introductory email if he had a problem with. Otherwise MD made a childish decision to terminate that guy.

Hi Friends,
We must be careful when we shoot out a mail to others. B'c it will be a record of whatever u send. And he must not have copied the mail to MD, CEO and senior managers. There is an email etiquette....whatto send and whom to send. The email which was send was very informal and can be sent only to the same mgmmt level people....not even to senior managers and VP's......my friend sent a forward to the boss and was fired for that...the forwards may b good...bur v need to b xtra cautious....

The incident clearly shows the prevalence of unprofessionalism at all levels in the Organisation. I guess its the generation gap... such kinda introductory mails, such proactiveness, initiation, easy going nature is appreciated by todays professionals but not by the old people. And it also shows that the others in the organisation like the VP, HR(Head) do not hold any powers as they were not able to handle the situation. The Organisation doesn't seem to have good future ...as it is evident that there is no proper delegation of power nor professionalism.
A good Organisation requires to have employees who are good at their work and if they are in responsible positions they need to have the guts to say "NO" to the boss if the situation requires.
Good that this person didn't waste his services for such an organisation. I wish he finds the right job for his attitude and nature. I wish him all the best.

Hello All,
I Dont know with what motive/feeling do people out here,write in context to Cirus`s friend.I personally feel if something like this,would have happend with me at some point of my career,when I have eagerly joined a big Corporate organisation,taking a leap from a consultancy,I would have been lost.I would think that I`m loser.
Just imagine guys,if something like this happens to you someday...
Dont only think from your brains,but for once think from your heart.
How will you react,if you dont have good friends around you...I really feel Cirus is doing a fabulous job to help his friend.
And with same the feeling,we HR`s should come up and try helping this chap to the best we can.
I dont know How far & how many of you agree with me ,but certainly I shall help him.
As I have his resume with me,with the help of Cirus,I`m using all my contacts to help him.
Would request all of you,kindly help him,if you can,if you want to.

Its a good lesson which the chap has learnt in a very bad way,which I`m sure he will never forget.
But I really feel the MD SHOULD LEARN A LESSON too.
How can he simply enjoy his life,and make this chap`S LIFE FOR THE DAYS HE GETS A NEW JOB,SO TRAUMATTIC...
Jobs are easy to get these days,but at the end of it I know its not that easy too...
We HR `s are suppose to take care of Employee Grievances,Employee relationships,etc..but if people in our HR fraternity;if we HR `s are only facing such issues,then how can the organisation think that we can handle/ease the rest of the employees.We should think over this...

One more thing All industries have different cultures,norms..etc.,I`m sure Varun did the introductory mailer thing,just becoz he belongs to the IT Services industry,my this statement doesn`t imply at all that I support his termination becoz of his Introductory mail sent in a Manufacturing industry.Please guys grow up as HR`s if you are condemning Varun for this act.This act of his should have been discussed only with HR Head,and not even by the MD.If the MD is so buzy ,then how does he have so much time to call and rebuke a Senior HR Executive,in his cabin,in front of the VP,HR Head,& Deputy manager.It`s not worth a termination(written/verbal) also.And we talk about this grand Tata`s.Guys this chap hasn`t even got a mail which says that he has been terminated from them.Aren`t they aware that a candidate needs to have certain documents for joining other organisation.He worked there for nearly 10 days,and this whole seen happens,isnt he entitled for his 10 days salary.The company is making him run for that too.First of all his esteem is down,getting jobs is difficult,he had to buy back fo 45days notice period in the previous organisation.and now they are making him run for his own documents.Doesn`t this sound pathetic,just imagine what the chap is going thorugh.
It`s very easy to condemn or sympathise with someone,but just feel if it would have happend with you...
I really feel Varun is very strong becoz he is still very optimistic.
I know him very closely and I myself come from Manufacturing industry background,so I can confidently say the fault is of that of the MD only...

See there are some guys who behave ,un professional in life and in career....SO never ever feel bad.....bcos...U have done a right thing....in simple words...U have extended ur hand to SHAKE with others....but he rejected....thats it...I think I have shown right and New gesture in introducing ur self to that BIG CORPORATE.....but they are unable to mix up the other hand for HAND SHAKE.
Cool Buddy......nothing to worry.....
One more point to be observed is....See how the HR head had tried to convince for his helplessness...and I think that HR should also resign his job...BCOZ...if he is unable to make their own people Secured..what will he do ,if the same situation comes to him....I THINK HE ROLLS OUT THE RESIGNATION AND GOES AWAY.
Sorry, if the same HR head is watching the same....I have expresses some kind of situation earlier in my job.
