Dear Paresh,
I do not know much about machines. However, I read in an email forward that the glasses used for drinking beverages are coated with wax. This wax supposedly melts when we pour hot tea or coffee into the glass. After consuming tea or coffee with the melted wax, it is said to solidify inside the intestine and sometimes stick, leading to stomach problems.
I am unsure how accurate this information is.

Dear Paresh,
Everywhere you can find the merits and demerits of all products/situations; nothing is wrong with tea/coffee machines if so, how can they be approved by government authorities? I highly recommend buying a tea or coffee machine as it will help your employees stay active in different ways.
Health Hazards of Tea and Coffee:
Ninety percent of people drink tea and coffee in our country at least twice a day. If there were health hazards in these products, how could they be available in the market? I am not saying it is highly advisable, but a single cup of tea or coffee cannot affect our health. Start your day with your coffee and feel the difference or drive your day with your loved one with coffee and see the difference, man.
Just go ahead and buy a good machine. That's it.

Dear Paresh,
Installation of a tea/coffee machine will be cost-effective. However, you need to ensure that the vendor you select has a good track record of maintaining the machines, as the machine contains edible contents that attract pests, especially ants and cockroaches. To prevent this, the machine should be cleaned at regular intervals (e.g., every 15 days). Additionally, please make sure that the vendor provides you with the lab report of the premix, which is typically available upon request from the user.
As mentioned by Dinesh, if the glasses are coated with wax, it may be true for some types of disposable glasses. You may consider using ceramic glasses, which can be reused and are also cost-effective. I hope these insights will be helpful to you.

Hi Paresh,
Regarding the tea/coffee products, you can consume Nescafe tea and coffee. It's a Nestle product and easily available at stores anywhere. It also comes in different flavors, so I hope your office staff will like it. We have been consuming the same product.

Instead of opting for readymade powder for tea and coffee vending machines, you can choose a machine that prepares tea and coffee with milk, coffee beans, and hot water. Tea bags are also available separately in the market for making tea. Using powdered tea and coffee can lead to acidity issues.

Hi All,
Up until last month, we were also using the coffee vending machines, but starting this month, we have contracted with a tea stall to provide daily tea facilities for our employees. It is better to opt for hand-made tea.

Dear Raghu,
The poison is also beneficial for our health if we use it in the correct way, and good food also becomes poison if we take it in more quantity. A small amount of coffee/tea consumed 2 or 3 times (100 ml each time) can provide alertness and increased activity in the muscles, nervous system, and heart. However, excessive consumption can lead to the release of adrenaline, increasing stress levels.
Consuming too much coffee/tea/chocolate/cold drink can have similar effects to long-term stress. There is a suggested link between caffeine intake and high blood pressure and high cholesterol levels.
It is important to be cautious when reducing coffee or caffeine consumption. Abruptly cutting it off can lead to experiencing withdrawal symptoms. It is advisable to gradually reduce consumption over a period of time.

In terms of health hazards related to tea and coffee, around 90% of people in our country consume tea and coffee at least twice a day. If there were health hazards associated with these products, they would not be available in the market. While I am not saying they are highly advisable, consuming a single cup of tea or coffee cannot adversely affect our health. Go ahead and invest in a good quality machine. That's it.

Dear Paresh,
I travel to different service partner locations and I have seen that nowadays there are Cafe Coffee Day machines installed in offices which use coffee beans and milk to prepare tea and coffee, resulting in a hygienic and good-tasting beverage. I think it does not cost much as even in small organizations, I have seen these vending machines.

Dear All,
Tea or Coffee - good or bad for health - let each one decide for him/herself. In the organizations, tea/coffee is routine and normal. Two times in a shift or even 3 times is usual. Tea supplied by vendors is neither very hygienic. These days, the cost of preparing and serving tea is so high that giving it for free is cheaper. If one has to provide it for free, then why not use a machine - let each one have it when they want it, and not because it is tea time.
No tea or no coffee is ideal. But that will have to be taught to employees. Till then, use a machine if possible.

There are no harmful chemicals used in the tea and coffee vending machine. In my company, we have been using the vending machine for the last five years. We use products from Hindustan Unilever Ltd.

Dear friends,
It is better to buy fresh milk from the vendors and provide whatever is needed for employees rather than using milk powder. This is to say, there is a machine that has 3-4 compartments in it: one for hot water, one for milk with sugar mixed, another without sugar, and coffee decoction available 24 hours through a tap attached to each compartment. Alongside, other powders like instant coffee powder, tea bags, chocolate powder, almond powder, and sugar are also kept in containers, together with paper cups. This arrangement is available 24/7, and the maintenance, refilling, and cleaning are taken care of by service providers. I have observed this setup in many MNC companies, and it is very effective and well-received by all. The fixtures are placed in a corner of the office, and staff can go there, fill their cups as they prefer, and then head to the foyer, chat for a while, or have a quick break. This also provides a refreshing change from the routine. Serving at the desk is not permitted with the intention to offer some relaxation in between tasks, as there isn't a designated tea time.

Hi Paresh,
Tea and coffee vending machines have been used for many decades in large companies and institutions. For that matter, Mr. Mahendar of Heritage Food Products in JP Nagar VII phase has his works where he exclusively manufactures what is known as Instant coffee powder, which is mixed with hot water from the vending machine and provides instant coffee. His client is none other than TATA Coffee. He has been supplying them for the last 10 years. He also supplies the vending machines, which are manufactured by him from a neighborhood unit. This unit, apart from making the machines, also produces instant badam milk, tomato soup, different flavors of tea including green tea, etc. He has installed these machines at many places and also maintains them. On no occasion are cockroaches or other insects supposed to have invaded the vending machine. This could have happened only if there was neglect on the part of the customer who did not follow maintenance instructions.
Mr. Mahendar has also successfully started HATTI KAAPI, which supplies fresh filter coffee, and many kiosks have been installed throughout Bangalore at prime locations. He also caters this coffee at Bangalore and Mangalore airports, at Infosys and Wipro food malls. If you are interested in either a vending machine with instant coffee/tea or fresh filter coffee to be served at your premises, please get in touch with him. His telephone number is 919591999439. He is a busy man, so keep trying if you get a busy tone.

Dear Paresh Vadher
Your concern for health related hazards with coffee / tea vending machines before a decision on procuring them is appreciated.
Have gone through the views of members on the plus and minus points of the coffee / tea vending machines in office area and generally endorse them. I would like to add –
• Tea is credited with beneficial property of antioxidant and hence less harmful than coffee.
• From hygiene point of view, disposable paper cups are preferred to glass, ceramic, plastic and other reusable types
• Periodically, the interior surface of the vessels in the vending machine should be tested for E-coli. This can be done by swabs sent to a lab.
. Through clear agreement with the vendor or other arrangements, the quality of water used should be ensured. [Many complaints of water quality used in Cola vending machines run by Franchise, are on record.]
I further endorse the following tidbits appearing in this chain and in the links to earlier discussion on the subject:
Coffee Machine Etiquette
Employees spill sugar or coffee in pantry floor or slab. Using sugar cubes instead of powdered sugar helps to minimize the hazard.
Posters
Have a good Time with me. (Vending Machine says to Employee )
Please Don't Press Twice to avoid overflow.
Keep yourself and office clean by not spilling over.
Deterrents
Institute a roster so that everyone in the office MUST take a turn in cleaning up the mess. Very soon peer pressure will mean that people learn to keep the area clean and tidy as they don't want to clean up other people's mess.
Posters aimed at changing behaviour of machine users
You know what behaviours are annoying you, ie spilling coffee or sugar etc. Just make a list of the things that bug you and post that near the coffee machine.
Something like posters on DO’s & Don’ts
You just create your poster like (Title) " Check Your nature & Character from your Coffee" showing 3 coffee cups and behind the coffee cups text like "If YOU spend your coffee time without spilling coffee - YOU are a socialistic person and you care about your environment and YOU are a good care taker of company - - something like that.... it makes them to think about their behavior.
Consuming too much coffee/tea/chocolate/cold drink has the same effect as long term stress. Beware of link between caffeine intake and high blood pressure and high cholesterol level.
Maintenance of Vending Machine
Vendor selected should have a good track record of maintaining the machines as eatable contents in the machine attract lot of pests specially ants and cockroaches. To avoid the same it has to be cleaned at regular interval (ie 15 days). Also the vendor should provide the lab report of the pre- mix, which is generally provided by the vendor on demand from the User.
