Through training, we are acquiring new skills. By acquiring new skills, you perform better. By performing better, you are scaling to new heights, which is known as development. Development not only means growth of scaling up in the organizational hierarchy, but also refers to self-development.

Hope it is clear.

Dear Santhosh,

Training is about enhancing knowledge and skills in a specific functional area, while development focuses on cultivating the right attitude towards the job for effective performance. This is achieved as a result of improved knowledge and skills.

"Training and Development" are two synonyms that, professionally speaking, interrelate to each other in the corporate world. It simply means a department that imparts training and, in turn, leads to the overall development of an employee, giving them the confidence to scale heights and reach their goals, i.e., the designation and authority they always dreamt of from the very first day of their professional life.

Training is an activity that is imparted to someone to perform a specific task. It can be for anyone. In the circus, animals are trained to do cycling, jumping, sitting with two legs, etc. I saw a news article recently in The Hindu that in a zoo, a chimp has been trained to bottle-feed tiger cubs with a photo. This is what training is about. It gets completed once the task is over. Then you move on to a different task.

But development is something different. It is the growth aspect of an individual. You hire a person for your shop floor, teach him the necessary skills to perform the task, do career planning, succession planning, mold him to match the requirements of the organization so as to take on high responsibilities. This is what development is about. Development can be anything, developing in a career, developing a child to become a musician, sportsperson, dancer, etc., to achieve what you (he/she) want.

However, without proper training, development cannot take place.

Training - Definite input to improve the skill set at the present level of work, a subset of development.

Development - Not definable, a superset, judgmental for improving the skill set to handle the next higher level.

Difference between Training & Development.

Training is a methodology used to develop an individual to improve his skills in that particular job.

Training is utilized for current purposes, such as enhancing skills and performance, and is typically short-term. Development, on the other hand, focuses on future prospects and is generally long-term.

Thank you.

Training is a behavioral change science to provide the skills that are deficient but required by the job/position. Development is the result of that training that will lead to the next position.

Dear Santosh ..hope this helps,
TRAINING AND DEVELOPMENT…THEY ARE DIFFERENT!
Remember that there is a big difference between training and development. You need to be doing both for your children and your team members.
Training is when you are preparing me to do something for you.
Development is when you are preparing me for a better future.
Training is teaching me how to do something.
Development is teaching me how to be a whole successful person, to be competent not only technically, competent as a manager, competent technologically but also to be a great leader who is has relationship competency and can get along well with one on one relationships and multi-relationships.
When your team feels like you are developing them, they become committed to your organziation and your mission.
Training without development is selfish. Doing both is a win win for all involved.
Remember that people will not be committed to you unless they are sure you are committed to them.
