Dear All,
Can you let me know your views on exit interviews in small organisations. Basically I want to know the effectiveness of this interview in organisations with about 50 employees where almost everyone knows everyone.
Thanks for your feedback in advance.

hi praveen,
exit interviews in small organizations is a very effective method.
it actually reveals at rue picture of the organization from an employee's point of view. It helps in-
what are the good points in the organization
how policies or compensation or performance appraisal process affects the employee performance
what is the work environment- is it good or bad
how to make improvements in the existing methods
what are the normal problems faced by the majority etc.
but exit interview might not be good if the person taking the interview is rude as the employee is leaving the organization. At that point the employee might not give a true feedback as he/she thinks that any kind of criticism might affect his smooth leaving.

Exit interview provides insights on what's happening inside. To some extent they are ok but not all the times. Employees are reluctant to speak openly.
When I was HR Manager, I found so many anomalies in my current set up. Exit Interviewee is something, I felt at times, "Hath ke kangan ko aarsi"
Better to plug the loopholes in the current system. You can obtain feedback from the employees when they are still employed and better not wait till they quit.

Hi Praveen
Exit interviews inorganization your size ,is a very valuable tool to assess HR & organization as such,It msut be planned well. Person conducting it must have good listenign abilities.
Also for a small firm ,it is easier for you to note Key Factors which make them happy n ones which are irritants. This will help you focus/priortize HR activities.
Strengths of the org can be anything from induction, training OR job profile etc.Irritants could again be in any range right from stationery to reportign structure, authority etc. Also soemtimes in small orgs counselling n propare care at exit, can stop the co from losing a valuable employee.

Hi All,
Its a process thru. which the HR person identifies or better understand the hidden facts. Exiting employees take this opportunity takes this opportunity to convey their view thru. this interview.
HR also should have a system of consolidating the exit interview details and position each problem appropriately and also to ensure such similar problems are rectified.
Thanks,
Mohan

Dear Rekha/Basant,
Thank you for the valuable inputs. It certainly helps organisations to have an insight into the employees minds. But what will be the effect on the manager? Will the manager be affected by the comments? Will this have a cascading effect?
Thanks to all others who have posted their views. Looking forward to your feedback to the above questions please.

The real fact is that the moment an employee communicates his resignation, nobody respond him properly. Please refer my posting during the month of November regarding how many HR guys are conducting Exit Interviews, no one has responded. This is what happens to an employee, who has submitted resignation letter.
Of course Exit interviews will give us good insight about the company's system provided his dues will be paid irrespective of the outcome of the exit interview.
